...Second Avenue Subway while trying to rape a Tactical Force policeman in drag. Kubrick also ignores a potentially exciting view of the 1760s--the Hogarthian underside of English society. All told, the carefully composed landscapes and Kubrick's use of a new German lens to film in candlelight just save this film from being potboiler par excellance. That Kubrick's visuals can overcome such poor acting is a credit to his skill with the camera, but certainly not to his powers as a director. Jeff Flanders...
...they are right. Barry Lyndon is an unusually beautiful film. But $11 million still buys an awful lot of beauty in almost any art form and Barry Lyndon hardly breaks any records in the cinema beauty contest. Take, for example, the many indoor scenes Kubrick shot using only genuine candlelight--something Hollywood has never been able to achieve before for lack of a fast enough lens. Kubrick's Zeiss superfast lens does the trick alright, but leaves the faces out of focus. "There was candlelight and wine and nice music and considerable fumbling," recalled Fear of Flying Author Erica Jong of her first bedding with a Columbia University sophomore. "I don't remember it being painful or bad," she disclosed, "nor do I remember the earth moving." Columnist Art Buchwald succumbed to the charms...
...celebrate her 62nd birthday, including America-Beautifiers Laurence Rockefeller and Mary Lasker and former Press Secretary Liz Carpenter, attended a mariachi Mass in San Antonio's 254-year-old San Jose mission. They then proceeded to the mission's high-ceilinged granary for a dinner by candlelight. The high point of the day, though, occurred when the revelers assembled in the middle of a busy downtown intersection to give the former First Lady her $45,000 birthday present: an elaborate fountain carved from Mexican lava stone and placed near the Alamo on the spot where some...
