...perhaps most -this wonderful, wistful ballad recalls a time they never knew. Beatles are legend. McCartney, 33, is here, right now, in barnstorming triumph, making his first concert tour of the States since he and his three noted mates sang their last song together at San Francisco's Candlestick Park in the late summer of 1966. McCartney still draws many of the Beatles faithful, to be sure. He has also found a whole new audience, his audience. They have come to hear him, not history...
...candlestick-cum-reliquary depicting the flight into Egypt, borrowed from a church in Gaeta, is an exquisite example of how late medieval French styles penetrated into Italian taste at the end of the 14th century. Bernardino da Foligno's late quattrocento bust of St. Balduino has a grave nobility and an intensity of modeling that, one supposes, the saint's living features could not have had. (The actual head of St. Balduino, like a stone in a peach, lies encased within the sculpture...
...production line. A snuff-making firm in Sheffield regeared its production from electric power to a water wheel first used in 1737. There was panic buying of some items, notably bread and toilet paper, and camp suppliers did a booming business in butane lamps and stoves. A Battersea candlestick maker turned out a million candles a day instead of his usual 250,000. His most popular item: a wax effigy of Prime Minister Edward Heath...
Lost Momentum. The big showdown occurred last week when the Dodgers met the Giants for the last time this season in a two-game series at Candlestick Park. In the first game, the slap-hitting Dodgers uncharacteristically clouted three home runs to outlast the Giants 5-4. In the process a disputed call and a near free-for-all over an exchange of beanballs resulted in two players from each team being thrown out of the game. Next night, the Giants rebounded long enough to take a 5-3 lead into the ninth inning. Then some more strange things...
...East Coast, Californians are turning to even farther-out candles. In Los Angeles, a firm called Control Tower offers candles in the form of slabs of Swiss cheese, bricks of marijuana, candied apples, chocolate kisses labelled "Kiss, Kiss," Popsicles (in the familiar wrapper) and giant crayons. The Candlestick in San Francisco sells elaborate, waxy and scented constructions. In fact, smell is big all over. Chicago's Cooper, Inc., offers chocolate, vanilla, and other food odors, and reports that Gold Coast matrons happily pay $25 for a French-made candle that gives off a scent of cypress...
