...called humiliating and embarrassing anecdotes aren't really all that humiliating and embarrassing. If you're going to base an entire performance on agonizing moments, then they had better be totally outrageous. This is clearly where Kron falls short. But we forgive poor, put-upon Lisa, admire her candor and laugh easily because it's nice to hear about crap happening to other people once in a while...

Cantwell's candor--her open honesty letting us become party to the most intimate details of her life, hopes and dreams--makes her life emerge with a wonderful fullness. The problem with the memoir, and with Cantwell's own life, is her marriage. It is described from a postdivorce viewpoint and is thus colored throughout as a negative relationship. From the start we await its collapse and wondering at Cantwell's constancy. And unfortunately Cantwell is unable to carry her memoir much beyond her ruined marriage. ...cholesterol kept in a normal range by medication. But is that enough? "Dole and his campaign are trying to be aggressive and proactive about a problem that doesn't really exist now but might flare up on them later," saysTIME's Michael Duffy. "By laying the predicate of candor and disclosure now, they not only take the issue off the table, they force other candidates to play at their level of openness.
