Inspiring as Rosa's choice is, Burger's Daughter is not primarily a call to follow her path. Gordimer is far too subtle for that--for her, Rosa's commitment is a "holy mystery," one she penetrates with her imagination, but cannot share. Rosa chooses action, but she accepts suffering and self-denial. Burger's Daughter provokes outrage and fear, and then leaves us hanging, torn between activism and knowledge of its costs

But one cannot gauge Helms the individual from The Man Who Kept the Secrets. Touching only briefly on Helms' personal life, Powers attempts to tell the secret history of the CIA by using his career as a reference point; since Powers portrays Helms only in his Langley office persona, he appears for the most part as just a particularly durable background actor in a play where the cast...
...Nathan stretches to the far-fetched in his attempt to imagine real life. Several plot contrivances mar the novel. But its richness and vitality cannot be overstated. It reads quickly, much like a longish (180 pages) short story, and so stimulating a novel is hard to relinquish to the bookshelf. The Ghost Writer ends too soon...
