...tepidness I saw in the other patrons made me doubt that it does. Even if the digital inventory expands far beyond the stock of out-of-copyright titles that the machine currently prints, I have to wonder whose book ownership needs are so extensive and obscure that they cannot be met by Amazon.com or the local bookstore. One answer, of course, is academics and bookworms—real constituencies, to be sure, but ones whose pent-up demand, alas, seems unlikely to revolutionize the business...

Look at our political debates today. Is it liberal or conservative to oppose multibillion-dollar payouts for the bankers and insurers who flushed our economy down their gold-plated toilets? Our conception of politics is broken if it cannot account for the fact that Michael Moore and Glenn Beck come to some of the same conclusions while having very different philosophies. Yet pollsters and the media still rely on it, to frame politicians and themselves...

...What the election may have shown is that Obama's popularity cannot be transferred. The President had campaigned and raised money for both Corzine and Deeds; Obama had also tried to put the remnants of his own campaign operation to use on their behalf. But many of those who voted for him in 2008, particularly young people and African Americans, stayed home this year. And in the end, both Corzine and Deeds stumbled on their own weaknesses...
