...Constitutional reform. The current system is unsustainable for all stakeholders. The Chief Executive cannot claim a popular mandate, relying instead on the support of a narrow group of electors with vested commercial interests-a system that leads to backroom horse-trading. The Legislative Council also suffers from a democratic deficit. It does not truly represent the people because half its members hail from the same types of vested interests, yet possess the same voting power as those directly elected. The system is unfair because it favors a few over the whole. Hong Kong needs full democracy...
...country from a dictator, perhaps to find and destroy some dangerous weapons." He made no mention of securing an oil supply, establishing military bases in the Middle East and promoting neoconservative ideology. Those less altruistic motives are the elephant in the room that everyone refuses to acknowledge. The U.S. cannot withdraw troops from Iraq because they are protecting oil, military bases and neocons' egos. Janet Maker Los Angeles...
...Efforts You asked if Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has a clear vision for Japan [Feb. 26]. Abe ought to receive due credit for what he has achieved in just a few months. The government asks the younger generation to be more patriotic, even when they cannot have confidence in their future. How can we call Japan a beautiful country? M. Otani Kagawa, Japan...
Plus, there's another reason to eat bison: doing so is good for the planet. Bison are leaner than cattle because they are still wild animals who range and eat grass; they do not tolerate confinement well, and so they cannot be fattened the way we do cattle, which we have bred to eat rich corn mixtures their entire adult lives. Growing corn to feed cattle costs the nation dearly in terms of pesticide and fertilizer runoff. The pollution and inhumanity of the confinement-feedlot beef system make it one of postwar America's biggest ecological blunders...
