...charm of the first Star Wars movies was the murkiness of these new worlds and the inability of the camera to do justice to them—there was so much that seemed just outside the frame. These movies were not spectacular, but palpable. The cantina scene in the original Star Wars is beloved not for its marvelous vistas, but for its seediness and its character and its suggestion of colliding worlds and species. The bicycles-across-the-moon scene in E.T. has a magical simplicity. Now filmmakers have the power to cram anything they want into the frame. Imagine...

...Tres Hombres, a cantina in the heart of Woodland Park, four of the men--Randy Halprin, Donald Newbury, Patrick Murphy Jr. and "Brother Jim"--were just starting to become regulars. "Just regular guys," says bartender Pam Smith. She remembers Michael Rodriguez--who had hired a hit man to kill his wife for $400,000 in insurance money--as being "real nice." He came in for lunch. The windows and the bar are framed by red plastic chile lights, sombreros grace the walls and bright green cactus sculptures are sunk into cavities in the walls. Triangular flags pushing tequila brands are a tribute to kitsch, but the gestalt works well, set off under a trendy corrugated...

...necessary prerequisite for any Tex-Mex restaurant, Baja offers a wild assortment of margaritas, both standard and bastardized with the likes of Chambord and Grand Marnier. A timely cantina, the bar also offers two martini specials: Fuzzy Grape Chinaco Martini (Chinaco, Peach Schnapps, grape juice and sour mix) and Tarantula Martini (Tarantula Azul, Cointreau, and Chambord). The mere descriptions sent my insulin levels through the roof and the floor at once...

...swelled the ranks of the fearful and credulous. On the Internet, cults multiply in service to Ashtar and Sananda, deities with names you could find at a perfume counter, or to extraterrestrials--the Zeta Reticuli, the Draconian Reptoids--who sound like softball teams at the Star Wars cantina. Carl Raschke, a cult specialist at the University of Denver, predicts "an explosion of bizarre and dangerous" cults. "Millennial fever will be on a lot of minds...
