...dinosaurs vanished abruptly 65 million years ago, they left an enduring mystery-and created a scientific parlor game. Hypotheses abound to explain the extinction. Brains too small in bodies too large? Emerging mammals feasting on dinosaur eggs? Now comes evidence for another possibility. Geologist Walter Alvarez, probing an ocean canyon near Gubbio, Italy, discovered an abrupt increase in iridium in a limestone layer dating back to the dinosaurs' demise. Probable cause: some mysterious, still unfathomable extraterrestrial event...

...while Spenkelink was serving a five-year sentence for armed robbery, he walked away from the minimum-security Slack Canyon Conservation Camp near Big Sur. Driving through Nebraska, he picked up a hitchhiker, Joe Szymankiewicz, 43, an Ohio parole violator who had spent 16 years behind bars for forgery, burglary, theft and other crimes. For several weeks they roamed the country, ending up on Feb. 3, 1973, in Room 4 of the Ponce de Leon Motel in Tallahassee. Next morning, a maid discovered Szymankiewicz dead in bed. Decontrol of U.S. gas prices has made deep drilling worthwhile; there is a lot of gas 15,000 to 25,000 ft. below Louisiana, Oklahoma and probably New Mexico. Just last week, Tenneco struck gas in the previously discouraging Baltimore Canyon, 80 miles off the New Jersey shore. Farther in the future, Ketelsen has hopes for geopres-surized gas-squeezing out large amounts of methane that is mixed in with sea water in mammoth caverns along the coasts of Louisiana and Texas. The $3-per-bbl. tax credit, now proposed...

Decontrol could lead some oil companies to drill merely for the sake of appearances. Opinion among Exxon's top management was divided on whether to invest what eventually became $460 million last year in a so-far futile search for oil in the Baltimore Canyon area of the Atlantic. Though preliminary seismic studies were not encouraging, the company went ahead anyway. The decision was made partly on the grounds that it could not be seen as declining to explore in an area so close to the petroleum-hungry Northeast...

...drinks, nor touches all those drugs that are served like hors d'oeuvres at Hollywood parties. But then Spielberg and his live-in companion for the past three years, Actress Amy Irving (Voices), hardly ever go out. Most of the time they stay in their house in Coldwater Canyon, and when they do eat out, they like ordinary junk food. Spielberg turns up his nose at "quality pizza," for example. "I like pizza that curls at the edge like Aladdin's shoes...
