Beyond the Western Hemisphere's contribution, the Europeans can still count on -for the moment, at least-some 325,000 bbls. a day pumped by tapline through Saudi Arabia to the Mediterranean. And they will still get some 800,000 bbls. a day around the Cape of Good Hope-including perhaps as much as 350,000 bbls. normally bound from the Middle East to the U.S. East Coast (a deficit that the U.S. will make up in routing more oil from the Gulf Coast to the Atlantic seaboard...
...TIME CHECK THE ORIGINAL CAPE TOWN REPORT IN THE "LANCET" AND REALIZE THAT THESE ENTHUSIASTIC COMMENTS WERE BASED ON ONLY EIGHT SUBJECTS WITH OBSERVATION PERIODS AVERAGING ONLY TEN DAYS? THE STUDY WITH THE TEN EGGS WAS ON ONLY TWO SUBJECTS. WHAT'S THE EVIDENCE FOR STATEMENTS THAT "THE PROPORTION OF FAT HAS GONE UP FROM 31% TO 41%, AND THE PROPORTION OF SATURATED TO UNSATURATED FATS HAS INCREASED STILL MORE SHARPLY"? IF THESE ARE CHANGES MEASURED BY RETAIL SALES OR AVAILABILITY OF FATS THEY PROVE NOTHING CONCERNING CHANGES IN FAT CONSUMPTION. FATS MAY WELL BE CONCERNED WITH ATHERO SCLEROSIS...
...last week the first optimistic predictions of three months' work had turned to talk of six months' or more. Once the work is under way, salvage experts hope to clear a shallow channel for ships of 25-ft. draft in a few weeks. Then tankers plying the cape route to Europe from the Persian Gulf could take a short cut through Suez on the empty return trip, cut their time by 25% and costs proportionately...
Harl Cook looks at life cheerfully. He is the son of George Cram "Jig" Cook, founder of the Provincetown Playhouse and inspirer of Eugene O'Neill when the playwright's work was first produced on the Cape in 1916. The elder Cook, writes O'Neill, was "always enthusiastic, vital, impatient with everything that smacked of falsity--he represented the spirit of revolt." Cook fils is also something of a rebel. When Cook pere died, a legacy to Harl provided for a Harvard education. About 1930, Harl came to Harvard--for three days--and then packed off with his inherited loot...
...Western Hemi sphere could step up production an estimated 1,300,000 bbls. to 1,500,000 bbls. without much trouble-enough for all U.S. needs and more than half of West ern Europe's. But tankers are in the shortest supply ever. Sending them around the Cape of Good Hope instead of through the canal would lengthen the Persian Gulf-Rotterdam round trip from 44 to 71 days. Experts estimated that the Suez closing would require the addition of at least 144 tankers just to handle the substitute oil shipments from the Western Hemisphere...
