...army and back in London as literary editor of a new little magazine. Once again the plot proceeds not so much by incidents as coincidence. In a series of set pieces -a funeral, a literary cocktail party -characters bob up from the past, intermingle, realign themselves and caper off. As they pass, the inexhaustibly observant Nick murmurs his commentary with a rueful smile. All rather contrived, perhaps, but as Powell has one of his characters say: 'Human beings aren't subtle enough to play their part. That's where art comes...
Fans of Mission: Impossible or The Great Escape could best appreciate the precision planning and bold execution of the Joel Kaplan caper (TIME, Aug. 30). Consider the facts: an American serving a murder sentence in Mexico was plucked from behind the walls of a heavily guarded prison, transferred to a light plane, then flown across the U.S. border to the safety of an unknown hideout. Amazing, just amazing. Even more amazing, if one can believe Kaplan's Mexican lawyer, is that his brilliantly engineered escape from Santa Marta Acatitla prison last month was all done quite legally...
...caper picture, The Anderson Tapes displays a slick criminal shrewdness: its paraphernalia and plans are always chillingly plausible. Had the film restricted itself to its own Rififiefdom, it would have remained as airtight as a legit alibi. Since Duke's parole, it seems, he has had no secrets that the cops do not know instantly. When he consults a black driver who lives above a Panther storefront, Duke's schemes are electronically processed...
...Potterian sympathy has found an ideal method of adaptation-the dance. Using members of the Royal Ballet, Choreographer Frederick Ashton has literally given Peter Rabbit and Tales of Beatrix Potter a new dimension. Jeremy Fisher the Frog, Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Mr. Fox and Co. spring and caper like Steiff toys given the spark of life. Around them spreads England's green and pleasant Lake District from which Beatrix drew her inspiration...
Favenin's bloody vengeance is solidly based on the standard "Rogue Cop" caper-maligned by the Department, the lonely and disgraced lawman corrects what the courts cannot. The old films implicitly applauded such vigilante tactics, but The Cop is far more ambiguous in its moral stance. It does not discount the failings of a system that allows criminals to prance defiantly through their civil rites. But it also indicts the kind of police who have created an environment about which Raymond Chandler once commented: "When you pass in beyond the lights of a precinct station you pass...
