...much of the Third World, the international economic system has failed to produce what Kissinger has called "essential well-being." Half of the world's 3.9 billion people have per capita incomes of less than...
...railways. He granted a new constitution in 1955 that promised Ethiopians equal rights under the law. In the 1960s, he turned Addis Ababa into a modern city. Yet Ethiopia remained a desperately poor land, whose 26 million people still have one of the world's lowest per capita incomes: $80. As discord grew in the land, the aging Emperor seemed incapable of dealing with it or even understanding it. In early 1974, when an army mutiny for higher pay led to a wave of disorders in the capital, the Emperor handed out wads of bank notes to beggars, seemingly...
...Comoro Islands, situated between Mozambique and the island republic of Malagasy, are not only one of the world's least-known places but also one of the poorest. The 290,000 people who inhabit the four islands have a per capita G.N.P. (mostly from vanilla, sisal and copra) of about $100. It has released a report claiming that the country has 100,000 more hospital beds than it needs-a figure some staffers at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare believe is correct. The surplus is costly, particularly in California, where...
Superficially, everything would seem to be heading up for the beer business. Per capita consumption of the golden brew in the U.S. last year reached an all-time high, currently equaling about a six-pack a week for every American 18 and over. Beer sales for the past several years have been going up 4% to 5% annually; so far, the rise in 1975 is running around 2%-not bad for a recession year...
