...banal sheen. This recurs on almost all of the tunes, for Peck's voice cannot seem to outsing the acoustic guitar and keyboard arrangements backing him. His voice tends to be too flat, lacking the depth that characterizes peter Gabriel. In fact, on the minute-and-a half a cappella "Wake Up Call," Peck almost falls flat without the backing music; it is a honest and valiant effort, but not strong enough to make anyone want to jump out of bed, musically speaking...

...trade letters and tapes before going into the studio. "We make records because we still have a lot of demons to exorcise," explains Perry. On The Wind That Shakes the Barley, an 18th century Irish song written to commemorate an uprising against the British, Gerrard's echoing a cappella is like a cold wind blowing over unmarked graves. Yulunga (Spirit Dance) begins with ominous droning and then, adding drums, shakers and Gerrard's serpentine singing, builds until its swirling patterns evoke the hypnotic gyrations of a belly dancer. Also of mention is Gavan Meehan as the unhygienic sailor Dick Deadeye. Meehan plays his part with comic grime; his voice is so expertly characterized we can almost see the phlegm in his throat. The male chorus is picturesque and in one scene, becomes a topnotch a cappella and physical comedy troupe. This is not a women's play; the female chorus does little except hum along in the back ground. The orchestra, conducted by Gilbert Rose, is powerful without intruding upon the action onstage...
