Richard Schickel's review of the film Pay It Forward was waaaaay too cynical [CINEMA, Oct. 23]. We were a better nation when Frank Capra was making those feel-good movies like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It's a Wonderful Life. If Pay It Forward's director Mimi Leder and her cast can even come close to making us feel uplifted and inspire us to go out and practice random acts of kindness, then good for them. His idea is to do good deeds for three people, each of whom does the same for three more individuals and so on--until, presumably, peace is established in the Middle East. This is not dissimilar to Frank Capra's John Doe movement and, indeed, the movie ends on a populist-sentimental note that's in Capra's vein, but shamelessly so.
