...world champion New York Yankees left the diamond at Yankee Stadium following their 10-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers last Thursday night, manager Joe Torre caught the attention of the rookie righthander walking beside him. Torre, with a slight tip of his cap, indicated to the pitcher the proper way of acknowledging the cheers. So it was that Hideki Irabu, who didn't miss a sign all night, took off his cap one more time, held it aloft and waved to the crowd...
...contributions in federal races to $5,000. It sounds loony, but Gingrich is right when he says there isn't enough money in campaigns. The question is what kind of money. I propose raising the limit from $1,000 to $5,000 a person each election. A more stringent cap was necessary in 1974, when the limit was set, given the slow reporting process of the day. New technology allows for freer, faster information exchange and would justify easing up on the caps, provided that disclosure was immediate. The $1,000 cap has not been adjusted for inflation...
History will recognize him as a statesman of the sea, a heroic explorer, a voice for the ocean. Some will smile, recalling his great charm, lilting French accent, red cap, irrepressible sense of wonder, passion for discovery and talent as a consummate communicator. ...shortcomings, the script of "Showboat" does have its moments. A particularly witty scene--in fact, the funniest in the entire show--presents a satirical parody of "showboat" theater, the kind of absurd melodrama that makes the framing drama look great in comparison, and reaches its pinnacle of hilarity with Cap'n Andy's spirited one-man enactment of the denouement and the wonderful punchline: "Curtain! No refunds." And the irresistible swing of "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" will have you humming or whistling it before you exit the theater. No wonder that song, along with "Ol' Man River," keeps...
...Bosley (a TV veteran best known for his roles in "Happy Days" and "Murder, She Wrote") makes a fine Cap'n Andy, jovial and kindly but with unexpected edge. The rest of the cast are generally quite good in their stock roles. Sarah Pfisterer as Magnolia demonstrates some impressive vocal chops and manages to convey the girl's radiant innocence winsomely, as well as her later, more subdued dignity as an abandoned wife. Real-life husband-wife team Kirby and Beverly Ward almost steal the show as the husband-wife comic team of Frank and Ellie who leave the show...
