...Middle East. All through Eton and Oxford, Thesiger dreamed of returning to the scenes of his childhood. A break came in 1930 when Emperor Haile Selassie invited him to attend his coronation in Addis Ababa. After ten days of festivities, the impatient guest slipped off on his first caravan. It took him through the unadministered territory of the Danakil, "Slender figures in short loincloths, their mops of hair dressed with melted butter, they had open, attractive faces, but each of them wore across his stomach a large, curved dagger from which hung leather thongs, one for each man that...

...Hampshire, Brown is skidding through a less-than-coordinated campaign. Once the 1976 wunderkind who humbled Jimmy Carter in several late primaries, the Brown caravan has attracted little interest this time around. Brown organizers had visions of college students abandoning their studies, boarding the buses and heading to Manchester for the winter. A nice dream, but it hasn't happened. "But wheeled vehicles are out of the question and even camels are doubtful." More likely, say observers, China may be sending in weapons by way of Pakistan...

...caravan of high-level visitors signaled the importance of India's role in shaping a cohesive regional response to the Afghanistan crisis. In the softest possible language, New Delhi had described Moscow's intervention as unjustified and "expressed the hope," as Foreign Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao put it, that the Soviets would withdraw. Mrs. Gandhi's government, however, was equally jittery about the possible creation of a U.S.-Pakistan-China axis, which could push India into an overly close relationship with the Soviet Union, with which it already has a friendship treaty...

Egyptian President Anwar Sadat got a hero's welcome as he paid his first visit next day to Sinai's "caravan city." After flying to El Arish, he prayed in the sands of the Sinai and placed a wreath on the war tomb in honor of Egyptian soldiers who died in action. Then in a moving ceremony, Sadat kissed a huge Egyptian flag and raised it over El Arish. Shops had been painted, and the fountain in the town square, filled with trash since the start of the Israeli occupation in 1967, had been cleaned and filled with...
