Some studies at the center are much more mundane. Jack Eddy, a visiting scientist at the Center, has shown how the amount of radioactive carbon in tree rings can be related to sunspots. Increased solar activity leads to warmer climates, Eddy says, raising the radiocarbon content of the rings. Another group of astronomers, working with radio telescopes designed to detect water vapor in remote parts of our own galaxy, found they could also use the radio telescope to measure the amount of water vapor in the earth's atmosphere. The method proved cheaper and more accurate than previous techniques, like...
...done before Stroke can write a symphony and show the entire structure of any molecule. But the results thus far are promising. Stroke's pilot study, involving a substance called magnesium bromide tetrahydrofuran, clearly reveals the precise arrangement of the molecule's magnesium, oxygen and carbon atoms in one plane of the crystal. It is more of the molecule than science has yet been able...

Boron, found next to carbon on the periodic chart of elements, has unusual binding qualities which could have new technological uses, Lipscomb said...
Tests did not find organic, or carbon-based, molecules in the Martian soil. Terrestrial soil is laden with such molecules, which are the remains of living organisms. But scientists agree that this negative finding does not necessarily weaken the case for Martian biology. There may simply have been too few of these molecules in the soil to be detected by the gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer designed to look for them. The picture is complicated by the biology tests run at the second Mars landing site. In the gas exchange test, the soil released substantially less oxygen than the sample...
