...biology lab, where they were analyzed for signs of growth, metabolism and respiration, processes that would signal the presence of living microorganisms. In one of the tests, a soil sample dampened with "chicken soup"--a nutrient broth--gave off a burst of oxygen. In another, unexpectedly large amounts of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide were released. While both results produced flurries of excitement at J.P.L., scientists eventually--though reluctantly--concluded that the gases resulted not from life processes, but from some exotic Martian chemistry. Their conclusion was bolstered when neither lander detected any organic compounds that would have signaled...

...reviewed 86 separate studies about the association between soot and dust particles and human illness. The agency was already thinking about tightening its rules on ozone, a noxious form of oxygen produced in the burning of fossil fuels. (Another fossil-fuel combustion by-product, carbon dioxide, is a greenhouse gas, responsible in large part for the phenomenon of global warming.) It reviewed an additional 186 studies on ozone, making this, according to Browner, the most extensive scientific review undertaken for any air standard the EPA has proposed...

Unless this empowerment--to control not only the nicotine content of cigarettes, already approved by a federal court, but their tar, carbon monoxide, carcinogenic flavorings and other additives as well--is a basic part of the deal and not conditioned on the FDA's having to meet evidentiary standards of the industry's devising, the whole settlement package is a toothless wonder and should be tabled. Even granted essential regulatory muscle, the FDA needs both the resolve to carry forward its regimen and the funding to do it properly; perhaps revenues from a higher federal cigarette tax should be earmarked...

Your article "Great Xpectations" teaches us that Generation X is exactly like the preceding generation, which was a carbon copy of the generation before it. In the 1930s, when I was a child, adults were saying the next generation would be different. Well, it was not! The human brain, for good or bad, evolves very slowly. The mindless rhetoric of "Great Xpectations" could be avoided if anyone of any generation read a little history! DOUGLAS KELLER Hollywood...

...clear of committing the U.S. to any specific reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. In an abrupt about-face from his recent support for tough domestic clean air regulations, Clinton's most substantial pledge was to supply developing countries with $1 billion over the next five years to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions. No better than "using a squirt gun to quell a raging fire," snipped Sierra Club President Adam Werbach. "With the whole world watching, the president of the world's biggest polluter needs to do more than warn of the dire consequences of global warming." Even though the President...
