Bank of America announced yesterday that it will donate $1.2 million to the Harvard University Center for the Environment over the next three years in order to fund research into carbon capture and storage. The bank is partnering with the Center for the Environment as part of its ten-year, $20-billion plan to support environmentally-oriented innovation by investing in renewable energy and financing sustainable construction. The grant will allow the center to step up its research efforts into carbon capture as part of Harvard’s Climate Solutions Program. Carbon capture and storage is the practice...
...year - is doable now, provided we have the political will. If you want to know why, visit Noel Kempff. Its biological value was incalculable, but to the people who lived in the forest, its only financial value lay in dead logs. REDD changes that - and with 29% of the carbon revenue from the project promised to local communities, it can change their lives too. "We finally have a way to pay countries for protecting forests," says TNC's Marsh. That's good news...
...tech concrete is just one of the products that has emerged from the research and development labs of cement, steel and chemicals firms this decade, and it signals a growing commitment by heavy industry to the notion of "sustainability." As public pressure has grown to reduce energy use and carbon emissions - and in general tread more lightly on the environment - companies in these industries have poured money into R&D efforts. Much of the work has focused on internal processes, especially on the critical task of finding out how to cut down on emissions during manufacturing. But in their labs...
...washing machines and other appliances. They're also experimenting with coatings that are both environmentally friendly and more effective in fighting corrosion. Dulux Trade, the paint subsidiary of Netherlands-based chemical firm AkzoNobel, this year started selling Ecosure, a type of paint with much reduced amounts of embodied carbon and other volatile organic compounds. And at the R&D center of French cement firm Lafarge, director Pascal Casanova waxes lyrical about Ductal, a super-resilient product the center has developed that he calls the "Formula One" of concrete. It's what architect Ferrier intends...
...waters have been rising precipitously, of course, since the middle of the 20th century. Global warming may be a culprit, but simply cutting carbon emissions isn't going to keep the city from drowning. An immense and intricate flood-control system is in the works. Evocatively called MOSES, an acronym for its Italian name, the $5.3 billion project is about half done, but it's not scheduled for completion till 2014. Financing has slowed construction: at one time, Venice had to sell off some of its venerated palazzi to raise money. But, says Rafael Bras, dean of the engineering school...
