...definitive evidence is yet available on the health hazards. But there is reason for concern. The fires produce some of the same carcinogens as cigarettes. They also give off" colorless, odorless carbon monoxide, which can be dangerous in a building sealed to prevent heat loss. Another troublesome emission is a family of toxic chemicals known as polycyclic organic matter, or POMS, which are to be studied by the Environmental Protection Agency...

DIED. Joseph H. Simons, 86, chemist who discovered one of the first practical ways to synthesize fluorocarbons; of Parkinson's disease; in Gainesville, Fla. In the late 1930s, as a professor at Penn State, Simons found that passing fluorine through an arc of carbon gas produced a few drops of clear liquid fluorocarbon, but his discovery had no obvious use. A few years later, when scientists could not find enough fissionable uranium to build the Abomb, Simons rescued the jar of fluorocarbon from a filing cabinet. The resulting chemical reactions yielded highly fissionable uranium 235. By the mid-1950s...

...unduly alarmist, and much of the information was well known to scientists. But last week a media brouhaha was triggered by new studies from the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Academy of Sciences. Both groups agreed on a startling prognosis: the earth is warming up from all the carbon dioxide being spilled into the atmosphere by the burning of fossil fuels, and worse, the first effects of the climatic changes could be felt as early as the 1990s...

General Motors, in a particularly hectic week, became part of another Government action when the Environmental Protection Agency ordered it to recall 112,000 of its 1979 Chevrolet Chevettes for exceeding maximum federal standards for carbon-monoxide emissions GM said separately that it is calling back 367,700 vehicles, produced mainly during the 1983 model year, to correct defects involving brakes. In addition, a federal judge released confidential company documents reportedly indicating that GM knew that its 1980 X-model autos had brake problems before it started producing the cars. The material was assembled in connection with a Justice Department...
