Talk about strange bedfellows. Scientists have shown that new bedsheets can emit formaldehyde--a possible carcinogen. The chemical is present in the coating that makes sheets--and permanent-press shirts--wrinkle-free. Other offenders: wet fingernail hardeners, latex paint and some floor finishes. What to do? Wash shirts and sheets before using, and keep your distance after applying fresh paint and other products...
...habit reviled as "filthy." Even worse, while I walked across the Yard, some of my fellow students would feign coughs near me. Since the dangers of second-hand smoke don't extend to wide open spaces, I understood that they were simply passing judgment on me, a walking carcinogen. At least during Lent, I wouldn't be a pariah...
...atomizers. The U.N.'s specialists say that 100 lbs. of anthrax bacteria sprayed around a city of 1 million could kill 36,000 people within a week. And Saddam has produced anthrax in large amounts, along with botulinum, a poison that kills by paralyzing the victim, and aflatoxin, a carcinogen...
...first place--a natural resistance to disease, perhaps--continues to protect them. It is more likely, says the National Academy of Sciences' Evan Douple, a leading expert in the field, that radiation is not quite as harmful as was supposed. "Radiation in general is a very ineffective carcinogen," he says. Below certain very low levels, it may cause no harm...
...scientific evidence linking cigarettes to lung cancer. The study, published in the journal Science strongly linked cigarettes to lung cancer and may force the tobacco industry to rethink its argument that no clear connection has been established between smoking and the disease. The research found a tobacco carcinogen called BPDE bonds to three molecular sites on a gene crucial to the development of cancer. The gene, known as P53, monitors DNA copying during cell division and destroys cells with defective copies of genetic material. When BPDE adheres to the gene through cigarette smoking, however, it becomes damaged and cannot eliminate...
