Ultimately, the survival of our planet and the solvency of our country will depend on cultural changes that persuade enough of us to use less energy and less health care. The spread of eco-consciousness has helped with energy, but utilities have helped more, and only doctors can lead the way toward a similar less-is-more mentality in medicine. Obama, as he's done this past month with Iran, will have to take special care to convince the hemisphere, if not the world, that the reality is just the opposite. Sunday morning, he called on "all political and social actors in Honduras to respect democratic norms, the rule of law and the tenets of the Inter-American Democratic Charter," insisting that the crisis "must be resolved peacefully through dialogue free from any outside interference."
