...Carey was elected as a reformer in 1991. He was supposed to wipe away the Teamsters' history of corruption, particularly under Jimmy Hoffa, who was jailed as a result of it. Carey's UPS victory may yet help him hold off Hoffa Jr., son of the former Teamsters chief. But depending on his culpability in the fund-raising abuses, Carey's platform as Mr. Clean may not survive. ...Finally, spare a thought for Ron Carey ? who went from hero to zero in the space of four days. It wasn?t tobacco or red meat that brought the Teamsters President down, but that other American vice: alleged campaign finance abuse. Perhaps the FDA ought to stick health warnings on soft money contributions...

...Carey has been down this road before. Earlier federal probes have focused on alleged ties to the Mob (he was later exonerated), and the purchase of a string of pricey vacation properties. But with the UPS settlement under his belt, notes Van Voorst, Carey should still be able to defeat Hoffa in the fresh elections scheduled for December. But the timing couldn't be worse: Teamsters are gearing up for an agressive membership drive. Charges of corruption aren't the best advertisement...
