...bearing French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman. The Frenchman's chauffeur slammed on his brakes as another Citroën, with Belgium's Paul-Henri Spaak inside, cut across his bow. A stately Rolls-Royce carrying Britain's Ernest Bevin slid in behind Schuman's car. Stalled motorists along the avenue furiously honked their horns. For a breathless moment it looked to fascinated Paris pedestrians as if the four diplomatic cars would become the center of a hopeless traffic jam. But unruffled cops blew their shrill whistles, waved their white batons and the traffic flowed again...
...chill day in Moscow, U.S. Ambassador Walter Bedell Smith decided he wanted to go fishing. He drove his car out to the Moscow Sea (an artificial lake near the capital) without notifying his MVD guards, who shadowed him everywhere he went. He persuaded the head of a-small fishery to take him out on the lake in the only rowboat in sight. Smith assumed that the guards, who had of course followed him, would wait at the shore. ...Wheel (United Artists) is a racing-car movie, and its cyclonic energy and pace are likely to leave audiences with dust in their eyes. As a chesty, first-year driver, Mickey Rooney burns up the racing circuit from Culver City to Indianapolis. Gripping the steering wheel with a fearful, downward thrust as though trying to keep the car on the ground, he never drives a dull race. He always wins, crashes, hurtles the wall, or narrowly misses burning to death. The movie falls short of the 1932 speedway saga called The Crowd Roars.
