...Tarantino has dreamed mostly of movies, and his pictures are pastiches, updatings, twistings of the films he loved in a previous life as the world's coolest, most knowledgeable video-store clerk. Kill Bill paid homage to Hong Kong swordplay films, and Death Proof to car-crazy exploitationers of the '70s. This one, which might seem a mixture of wartime films from the U.S. and France (it does absorb some of the aura of François Truffaut's 1980 The Last Metro), is really, as Tarantino has said, "a spaghetti Western but with World War II iconography." That means...

...chatter is pure Tarantino. For all his notoriety as a director of complexly choreographed action, gore, car and dance sequences, what he really likes it to let people - meaning himself, as the screenwriter - talk. Inglourious Basterds is, after all, a war movie without a single scene on the front lines. No long tracking shots of soldiers crouching in foxholes or marching across an open field, aiming death at their enemies. ...surgical approach to the dealer closings probably would have worked. It might have started with a letter from the head of the car company to the local mayor. It might have included a letter to all of the people who bought a car from the dealer being closed saying that they would get a year of free oil changes at the dealer staying open in the next town. There might even have been an apology for doing something which, under normal circumstances would never have been done...

...White House argues that the new rules will still give American drivers the latitude to buy heavier cars and trucks if they want. The White House official said that each vehicle class will have its own tighter standard, meaning that automakers won't be able to get away with balancing lots of gas-guzzlers with a few highly efficient cars. "It preserves consumer choice to buy any type of car, but all cars will be cleaner," the official said. (See the history of the electric car...
