...warned Joshua Rosner, managing director of Graham Fisher & Co. and Joseph R. Mason, a finance professor at Drexel University in a paper in early 2007. When all the indicators went bad - delinquencies and interest rates up, home prices down - the agencies started yanking the ratings on CDOs by the carload. As the number of subprime delinquencies started to climb, and the magic mark-to-model accounting that the investment houses used to value their AAA and AA CDOs got market-tested - as in, "What will you give me for this piece of paper?" - the game was over...
...even after weeks of preparing for the inevitable takedown, even knowing that half a million people played Scrabulous every day, Hasbro still couldn't handle the traffic at the switchover. The site crashed like a carload of clowns at the circus early Tuesday. Soon, a notice was posted on Facebook: "We're working on some tech problems and Scrabble will be ready to play as soon as possible!" the developers wrote, adding that "we're making changes to Scrabble for its official launch in mid-August...
...some ways this is inevitable. Compared with art's history, which is largely sorted out, the present is always a mess, full of dwarf stars and bit players. In a now classic episode of Chappelle's Show, comic Dave Chappelle plays a blind, black white supremacist who inadvertently calls a carload of rap-listening white boys "niggers." The kids' reaction: "Did he just call us niggers? Awesome!" The country is, at least, more pop-culturally integrated - one nation under Jessica Alba, J. Lo and Harold & Kumar - and with that comes greater comfort in talking about differences...
...brazen even for the weak-willed Palestinian Authority. Last week, the Authority declared it would prevent armed groups from carrying weapons and, over the weekend, some of its policemen even tried to disarm a carload of Hamas men. A gunfight broke out that spread until it killed three people. Hamas leaders threaten civil war unless the Palestinian Authority backs off. Civil war is unlikely, as is the prospect of Hamas disarming before January elections, as the U.S. urges and Israel insists. The new model for Hamas is the Lebanese group Hizballah, which maintains a large militia while also sitting...
