Even the minor characters are easy to appreciate. T.J. Meyers and Ian Jon Bourg draw many smiles and even occasional laughter from the audience as the perplexed and frustrated theater owners, Firmin and Andre, respectively. Carlotta, played by Kelly Ellenwood, makes and excellent egotistical prima donna. However, in this particular production, she seems more pitiful and needy than she does vicious and greedy. Her companion, Piangi (Stefano Fucile), possesses both a self-esteem and a voice pompous enough to match hers. Hating the two of them is still enjoyable, but not exactly a pleasure...
...Houston's Theater Under the Stars. Yeston's melodies often skim the roiling emotions Lloyd Webber's music swims in, but they are sophisticated show tunes, operatic and operettic by turns. Kopit balances the Phantom-Christine romance with an All About Eve , rivalry between Christine and the diva Carlotta, then a Star Wars father-and- son relationship in Act II, when the play finds its heart. The production is suave, intimate -- a glittering bauble to Lloyd Webber's grand chandelier...

Another large problem with character is that Carlotta receives almost no attention. Her story opens up the book and she plays an important role at the end, but in between there is almost no notice of her, except to show her as Suwelo's lover. She gets less of a chance to reveal her character to the reader than the other three protagonists and they do not get much...
...fill out the roster of voiceless messengers from Walker, there are a host of stereotypical minor characters. An aged British aunt spits out attacks on the Victorian era on her deathbed. A poor little rich girl buys a yacht to rescue Carlotta and Zede from prison, and, after wandering through the jungle in pink boots, she makes a new identity as an art teacher in Africa. Her rich parents, she claims, have "personally assasinated six rivers and massacred twelve lakes." A vicious guerilla fighter with a heart mothers a child and dies of grief when the father takes the daughter...
