...course, the first film to deal with these issues. A number of American movies have re-evaluated the roles of men and women throughout the decade. The cycle began when Mike Nichols' Carnal Knowledge and Paul Mazursky's Blume in Love first used comedy to expose the hypocrisies of the bright but sexist American male. After the women's movement took hold, films like Martin Scorsese's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore and Mazursky's An Unmarried Woman went further by trying to spread a new, liberated feminine ideal to a mass audience...
...INTELLIGENT STUDENTS need this cliche-ridden crutch to college. The insecure may empathize with the tongue-tied beanstalks in the section on relationships--but what's a manual called College Knowledge without a discussion of carnal knowledge? As it is, all references to clandestine activity--booze, drugs or sex--are submitted from the parent/medic perspective: peril shadows those who indulge. Long lists proclaim the relative effectiveness of various contraceptives; even lengthier ones describe the side effects of drugs. Most students are already bombarded by such warnings, yet Edelhart omits what could be the most useful information to students themselves...
...like the word decadent. All shimmering with purple and gold. It throws out the brilliance of flames and the gleam of precious stones. It is made up of carnal spirit and unhappy flesh and of all the violent splendors of the Lower Empire: it conjures up the paint of courtesans, the sports of the circus, the breath of the tamers of animals, the bounding of wild beasts, the collapse among the flames of races exhausted by the power of feeling, to the invading sound of enemy trumpets. -Paul Verlaine, circa...
...reasonable suspicion, though, that controlled climate, by inducing Congress to stay in Washington longer than it used to during the swelter season, thus presumably passing more laws, has contributed to bloated Government. One can only speculate that the advent of the supercooled bedroom may be linked to the carnal adventurism associated with the mid-century sexual revolution. Surely it is a fact-if restaurant complaints about raised thermostats are to be believed-that air conditioning induces at least expense-account diners to eat and drink more; if so, it must be credited with adding to the national fat problem...
...Tannhauser, April 26. Beyond the superb production--including a shadowy, carnal Venusberg and rear projections of woods--this Tannhauser features the legend of Leonie Rysanek's exuberant Elisabeth, a vocal titan of a heroine. Richard Cassilly in the title role acts and sings much more reliably than the man he replaced, James McCracken, whose croaking was the chief liability of this opera as presented in New York last year...
