...cross between two bee varieties (Carniolan and Italian), the Squamish bees were brought to the Squamish River Valley from Holland 35 years ago by a Belgian immigrant. Now there are some 50 colonies of about 60,000 bees each. To protect the strain, the British Columbia provincial government has barred the importation of other bees into Squamish Valley.
