Most soldiers, when you question them, say: "There doesn't seem much time to think about Christmas this year, and anyway the setting is all screwy." Which, of course, it is. It is a far cry from carol singers tramping through the snow to the lean, gaunt, green-garbed Americans squirming through drip ping man-high Kunai grass, or sniping Japs from the fronded tops of coconut palms, or flitting like phantoms from tree to tree in the weird firefly-spangled jungle...
...Carol Wheeler, an excellent young actress, gives the best performance in the show, looking so lovely that, by Hollywood standards, she wouldn't have to act at all. John Rand '43 plays her amusingly inarticulate suitor. When these two are on the stage, the play is what Behrman intended it to be. Adele Thane does well in a thankless part, and the setting is unusually effective...
Even so, it is certainly worth a trip to Beacon Hill for a glimpse of Behrman and an eyeful of Carol Wheeler...
...amateur cast would find its talents inhibited by repeated mechanical difficulties, and a heavy load falls upon the Playhouse's experienced wheelhorses. Burt French, Katherine Whitfield, Carol Wheeler, and John Rand '43 support the double triangle around which the plot moves. Adele Thane as a scatterbrain middle-aged wife is glaringly miscast; she parboils the comic two thirds of her part and convincingly portrays a dramatic third act. Make-up difficulties hamper Robert Bastille'43, for his audience cannot forget that they see a Harvard man disguised as a sexagenarian...
