Nowhere was the downside of high definition more apparent than at the Academy Awards in February, when the few viewers with HDTV caught Hollywood's biggest stars working the red carpet. By some accounts, actor-producer Michael Douglas, 59, ruggedly handsome on film, became downright old, especially next to his high-def-defying spouse Catherine Zeta-Jones, 34. ...else and see nothing but bobbing heads, broken only by the occasional head lifted up in the midst of what can only be perceived as deep existential contemplation. Such is the palpable ferment of this small space that during reading period, it becomes a kind of book-lined red carpet, the place to See and Be Seen for the tri-colored highlighter toting and Nalgene swigging A-List (forget Chanel, the oversized waterbottle really is exam season’s must-have accessory). The duo, who met on the set of 2001's Vanilla Sky while Cruise was married to Nicole Kidman, still "talk all the time," his rep says. But their relationship was strained by the constant travel their filming schedules required, says her spokesman. Cruise recently dropped...

At first glance his picture of Sugar's, a place in Davenport, Iowa, appears to show a room where everything--the upholstered chair, the thick synthetic pile of the carpet, the strident green walls--reaches toward some misconstrued and imperfectly realized ideal of home. But the plot thickens once you know that this awkward chamber is the "green room" of a small-city brothel. (That copy of Hustler on the floor is a hint. So is the picture's title.) That room may be empty...
