Take, for example, last Monday night. Channel 4 had on "The Best of Carson" with some guy named Merle Earle. Channel 5 had Police Story, with aging Presidential groupie Angie Dickinson and that guy with the hole in his chin. Rockford, meanwhile, had a very cool evening. He almost got his hand broken. His Firebird left the ground completely on at least two occasions. He got cheated out of his fee. In the end he helped steal a Mercedes limousine. Now, if you can't tell how cool all this is you might as well put your head...
...alternately humorous and sadistic thugs, Nolte and Weld are running for their lives, down to Los Angeles and finally out into the desert to an abandoned hippy enclave where Nolte once lived. But the summer of love died long ago, infiltrated by COINTELPRO and laughed to death on Johnny Carson. In the end Nolte is dead too, and Moriarty and Weld are driving back out across the desert back to bourgeois, empty lives in Berkeley. The long night settles...
...plot was nothing unusual for a Pudding show, where original thought usually takes a back seat to tradition and G-strings. Superspy Carson O'Genick (played by Phil Murphy) is sent on an assignment from the British Intelligence with his one-time lover Natalie Dreste (David Merrill) to explain the link between the discovery of large amounts of opium in the Near East and the desire of the Society for the Prevention of Anglo-Saxon Morality (SPAM) to destroy the British Empire...
