Breslin should feel at home: the crush of shows elbowing for space in the late-night arena is starting to look like the 5 p.m. commuter crowd at Penn Station. A year ago at this time, the field was largely the domain of NBC's Johnny Carson-David Letterman duo and ABC's Nightline. But Joan Rivers, who raucously departed as the Tonight show's permanent guest host last spring, has just launched her own syndicated talk show, telecast live at 11 p.m. EST and currently seen on 99 stations. Brenner's Nightlife, another syndicated entry...

...none of the newcomers have come close to upending Carson, still the after-hours ratings king. The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers, the flagship of Rupert Murdoch's new Fox Broadcasting Co., has done respectably in the ratings, but is well behind Carson, averaging a 4.9 rating in twelve prime urban markets, compared with Carson's 7.5. Brenner's numbers have been more disappointing, hovering around 2.4. ...went. There were shows at night, and on Saturday morning there was a roast of Ronn Lucas, who works out of Las Vegas, has done the Johnny Carson show and was named Ventriloquist of the Year at the convention. Sharp one- liners fell like hatchets. Lucas at one point categorized one of his roasters as "a good example of what happens when a fetus does not get enough oxygen." All good fun, and afterward a group photograph was taken of everyone and every dummy. It made for a particularly arresting tableau...

...retrieves even marginal deposits. One place where the method will be used is Angels Camp, Calif., about 120 miles east of San Francisco. Angels Camp provided Mark Twain with notebooks full of prospecting lore for his short story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. Today workers for the Carson Hill gold-mining company are blasting and carving out a 1,100-acre open-pit site. When it begins full operation in October, the Carson Hill venture will be the first commercial gold mine to open in the Angels Camp area since 1950. The company's general manager, W.B. Williams...

Other miners continue to see a bonanza in more traditional methods. About eleven miles southeast of the Carson Hill site, Canadian-backed Sonora Mining has invested $85 million to build the largest conventional gold-processing mill in North America, due to open early next year. Sonora hopes to excavate 2 million oz. of gold from the hills around Jamestown (pop. 950), a sleepy settlement born during the 1849 gold rush...
