...minute items. Janette Mederos was among nearly 200 people who crowded into Fred's, one of the few stores still open by 2 p.m. Though many shoppers were visibly frustrated to find empty shelves where batteries, candles, and flashlights once stood, Mederos took it all in stride, loading her cart with tiki torches and charcoal...
...McDormand's Linda Litzke, assistant manager at a D.C.-area gym, is at the opposite end of the esteem spectrum. Primally troubled by her sagging derriere, and by "a gut that swings back and forth in front of me like a shopping cart with a bent wheel," she obsesses on the plastic surgery she thinks will give her some kind of a life. The ruck of men she's found through online dating services don't offer much. One of them takes her to a movie comedy and doesn't laugh; to dinner and doesn't talk...
...because United had lopped off one attendant from their complement, and the plane was chock full. Stuff was stuffed everywhere because no one wanted to fork over United's $15 fee for a bag. The highest injury rates were among males ages 10 to 19 and those over 70, according to a study by the University of Alabama at Birmingham. And these aren't scratches from falling into a sand trap. The wounds include concussions, fractures, even hemorrhages...
Once I got on the beverage cart, even my mentor, flight attendant Mark Fields, who had failed me on all my tests throughout the day, said I rocked. Sure, some of my methods were unorthodox, according to FAA regulations, like making a cocktail for myself and drinking it as I went down the aisle, but I think that did a lot for the up-sell. Even my creepy workplace flirting finally found an appropriate context. "I give you a 9.5 out of 10," Fields said. "You didn't just give that woman a blanket; you opened it up and wrapped...
