...lines or the distribution of shadows seems to miss the point, as though dwelling on style means slighting the substance. Worse, it suggests that the work was preconceived in a way that no reporting is supposed to be. The examples of artist-reporters like W. Eugene Smith and Henri Cartier-Bresson prove otherwise, but the assumption survives that artists have visions, journalists have assignments. They both may think to themselves, "I am a camera," but each means something different...
Ready or not, here they come. Clutching their Vuitton luggage and checking their Cartier Panthere wristwatches, wealthy foreigners are lining up with their less fortunate countrymen at U.S. Immigration desks. The new arrivals are not jet-setters here for a month-long shopping spree or speculators merely stopping off to tuck away foreign currency in U.S. investments. They are ambitious entrepreneurs and professionals ready to catch the go-go spirit, to buy homes and consider citizenship in the nation that, for the present at least, offers them attractive business opportunities and an amenable society. Customers have always paid premium prices for the fine jewelry, china and silverware at Cartier, the world-renowned emporium for the elite on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue. But in recent years they have apparently been getting bargains, and illegal ones at that. Law-enforcement officials charged last week that the store has been helping customers evade sales taxes, which are 8.25% in New York City. Store Manager S. Howard Warnock was indicted on 156 counts of falsifying business records, and Assistant Manager Thomas Foster was named in 124 counts. They could face a $5,000 fine and a four-year...
...probe of Cartier revealed that at least $260,000 in taxes went unpaid on 125 sales over three years. Warnock and Foster allegedly allowed some customers, who will not be prosecuted, to supply false non-New York shipping addresses (out-of-state buyers are exempt from sales taxes). Investigators charge that Cartier sent empty boxes to the bogus addresses, but the jewels left the store in the customers' pockets. Similar tax scams could be depriving New York State and local governments of more than $100 million in tax revenue annually; several retailers are still under investigation. Said New York City...
...with only two small windows at the top of the solid gold case, as objets of decorative jewelry, like a piece of Lalique crystal. On the tony reaches of Madison Avenue, Watch Entrepreneur Stewart Unger last fall opened Time Will Tell, a watch boutique that sells everything from period Cartier (a 1930 Tank at around $2,500) to certified Mickey Mouse watches ($500.) "The demand is just about to bubble over," predicts Edward Faber, who shows a lavish collection of oldies in his jewelry gallery off Fifth Avenue. "These watches are still significantly underpriced...
