There's just one snag. The carts are adorned with the hotel's logo and the Mandarin Oriental group's signature gold fan - a dead giveaway that you are a) cashed-up and b) from out of town. If you don't want every shopkeeper in KL rubbing hands with avaricious glee at your approach, we suggest you cover up these emblems, or better still, ditch the cart and carry a cheap tote like everyone else...

...Wind in the Willows, Mr. Toad romances his gypsy cart until he is transformed by the sight of that splendid innovation, the motorcar. The gypsy cart is forgotten--is junk. We are all Toad. We need the sobering voice of Mr. Badger to talk us down from our manias...

There, relishing dishes like poularde de Bresse stuffed with foie gras (and an amazing cheese cart), I felt as pampered as a Parisian lapdog. At a fraction of the price but still a good value, Chez Paul (13, Rue de Charonne) delivers lace-curtained, cassoulet-slinging bistro fare. Georges, the whimsical Philippe Starck-- designed restaurant atop the Pompidou Centre, offers simple Mediterranean selections...
