...lift, a deputy sheriff unbolts the face-high shutter in the solid steel door of the cell and calls to prisoner 4013970. O.J. Simpson arises and is led across the hall for his daily shower. Returning to his cell, he shaves at the stainless-steel sink. A heated kitchen cart is wheeled down the corridor, and through a slot in the door Simpson is handed a breakfast of scrambled eggs, potatoes, two slices of wheat bread and coffee brewed in a stainless-steel kitchen vat so wide it uses a bed sheet for a filter. His only utensil...

Once killed, many tigers join the corpses of leopards, jackals and other animals in a grotesque procession by cart and truck that leads ultimately to a series of tenements along a narrow, filthy alley in Delhi's Sadar Bazaar. In one cluster of squalid apartments, the TRAFFIC sting operation discovered more than a dozen families engaged in the illicit wildlife trade. There the once magnificent animals are skinned, their prized parts dried and packaged, and their bones cleaned and bleached. The skins travel west, often ending up in the homes of wealthy Arabs, while the bones make their...

...characters but finding dignity in their primal passions. In particular, Willard White and Cynthia Haymon invest the title roles with wrenching believability. In Nunn's conception, the crippled beggar Porgy is less pathetic and helpless than in most productions, hobbling on crutches instead of pushing himself on a cart. At the end he flings away his crutches and, in search of his missing Bess, lurches off painfully, heroically into a blaze of backlighting. It's a dazzling final image, but one that also points up the drawback of Nunn's approach. This Porgy provides more compelling drama...
