...animated composite, a digital cartoon. Just keep telling yourself that when you stare into his disturbing photorealistic visage at the multiplex next summer. And he's only one of a complete cast of computer-generated actors in Final Fantasy, a Columbia Pictures feature with a rumored budget of $70 million, based loosely on the multimillion-selling series of PlayStation games of the same title. A science-fiction epic that deals with earth's response to alien invasion in 2065, Fantasy looks to be the first movie that does for humans what Steven Spielberg did for dinosaurs and Pixar...

...dinner, we cannot remember the name of the sculptor who did the Statue of Liberty. I tell a story about Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, and about their creator, the great animator Chuck Jones, who has a cartoon on his office wall, captioned "Agnostic Fleas," showing two fleas standing perplexedly in a wasteland filled with enormous stalks that turn out to be huge hairs; one flea says disconsolately to the other, "Sometimes I wonder if there really...

In a calculated show of political restraint, Castro didn't come to the airport to hail the pint-size icon. Well, bad news, Em. Despite the old Bugs Bunny cartoon (in which a futuristic headline proclaims SMELL-O-VISION REPLACES TELEVISION!), scented TV is still unlikely to be in our parlors 20 years from now. (Emeril, alas, very likely will.) The reason is less technical than economic. Smell can theoretically be digitized, and there are researchers working to do exactly that. But Smell-o-Vision was tried years ago--with varying degrees of technical sophistication--in movie theaters. Now it's gone. Shockingly, audiences have failed to protest...
