This year's "lighten up" award goes to Barbara Ehrenreich for her column "What a Cute Universe You Have!" [ESSAY, Aug. 25]. In it she slams the Pathfinder team for giving rocks on Mars cute names and Disney for making a cartoon that is funny. Offhand I would say that anyone who can land a robot on Mars deserves to name the rocks whatever he wants. It's O.K. for animated films to be funny. And Ehrenreich's sense of wonder and awe at the mysteries of life must be extremely fragile and shallow if it can be spoiled...

...FRANCISCO: R.J. Reynolds, owners of the Camel cigarette brand and its now-defunct cartoon icon Joe Camel, have signed a $10 million settlement with 13 Californian cities and counties. State attorneys, who filed the lawsuit in 1991, get their fees paid with $1 million of the settlement amount. The other $9 million will go toward anti-smoking education aimed at undoing Joe's influence among children. Surprisingly, R.J. Reynolds did not offer to pay off the settlement with Camel-embossed duffel bags and cigarette lighters...

...smoking and would never dream of asking for compensation for something that is a personal choice. I am a Generation Xer who tried smoking at 15. And even at that age I was intelligent enough to realize that it is not a safe habit. A Marlboro Man or a cartoon camel had little to do with my smoking.
