Still, SpongeBob SquarePants belongs to a different breed of contemporary cartoon than Family Guy or The Simpsons. To begin with, its tone can’t exactly be described as one of social commentary. Its characters inhabit an underwater world that is in no meaningful way an avatar of our own. Anthropomorphic sea creatures might lie only a few steps beyond an alcoholic talking dog, but those steps cover significant distance. A post-election political cartoon featured an obese Ted Kennedy asking an equally rotund Michael Moore “Are we twins?” while a caricatured Jesse Jackson goes off on a nonsensical diatribe/rap about black oppression...
Bush needed to demonize Kerry to make him an unacceptable alternative. The strategy carried some risk: negative ads over the summer portrayed Kerry as such a ridiculous, windsurfing, flip-flopping fop that when the cartoon version of Kerry didn't show up for the debates, Bush suffered in contrast. It was a rare miscalculation by a politician who understands well the value of low expectations. But overall, Bush succeeded in making Kerry appear an litist emphatically defending moderation at a time when nothing less than passion would do.
