...billboard stands rather unremarkably in a field of tall grass, a few hundred yards beyond the high barbed-wire fence, past the NO TRESPASSING signs and across some towering cranes and rusted tracks. It reads: WELCOME TO FLINT, PLEASE BE CAREFUL. It is an uninspired sign featuring a cartoon CSX conductor--one of those corporate image-enhancing niceties that until a few weeks ago blurred into the desolate industrial landscape like so many slabs of sheet metal. For whom the sign's message is intended has always been unclear; CSX trains only carry freight, and it's too far away...

...world as you find it. In a TIME/CNN survey of graduating seniors in 13 high schools along Highway 50, very few of them sounded like Marilyn Manson (rock bogeyman). A few of them sounded like the Brady Bunch (holy innocents). A lot of them reminded us of Lisa Simpson (cartoon goddess--aware of life's shadows, inclined to make for the light). ...major character is called for icing by Mr. Freeze, or blithely sideswiped by Speed 2's Bullock during the most deplorable driving-test scene in film history. Something is wrong with Hollywood if the answer to every story problem is a crash. Even the otherwise canny Disney cartoon Hercules has an isn't-it-funny-that-a-whole-Greek-marketplace-falls-down scene...

...play American tunes. On Vorosmarty Ter, the main square downtown, tourists sit and soak in the "authentic" Hungarian atmosphere with Toni Braxton's "Another Sad Love Song" in their ears, piped in by an outdoor cafe. Television is a hodgepodge of local programming, English-language shows on The Cartoon Network and CNN, and a host of American programs, from "Saved by the Bell" to "Married With Children," dubbed in Hungarian...
