...theater on the Disney lot in Burbank. Why did it do so well? Because the ticket price is a whopping $50, with the perk of a trip to a nearby venue (Roseland in New York), where the wee ones can have their pictures taken with all nine Disney cartoon princesses and get a lesson in drawing one of the film's characters from a Disney animator. Many of the shows were sold out, proving that the Mouse House hasn't run out of ways to squeeze big bucks out of kids and their parents...
Aesthetically, the new Prisoner is a feast. The Village, manicured and painted in cartoon pastels, has a menacing gaiety. (The show was filmed on location in southern Africa, and it's shot through with gorgeous lemony light.) The miniseries shows flashes of surreal playfulness: the only foods served at any occasion in the Village, for instance, are wraps. (You just knew they were evil.) And the sound track is heavy on Brian Wilson's Smile, his opus begun around the time of the original Prisoner, which lends this version a dreamlike carnival tone...

...Christmas Carol cost a bundle, $200 million, and no doubt Disney would have liked a bigger start for their way-before-Christmas movie. But it registered the best first weekend of any Jim Carrey movie of the past five years in which he has been seen. About a third of children in the U.S. are considered overweight or obese, and researchers believe television advertising is a significant contributing factor. A study in the July issue of Health Psychology showed that 7-to-11-year-old kids who watched a cartoon peppered with food commercials ate 45% more snacks while viewing the show than did kids who watched the same program without ads.
