...early 1967, U.S. commercial aviation experts had spent a decade vainly trying to develop a highly reliable midair collision-avoidance system (CAS). The number of "near misses" by U.S. aircraft had risen to more than 400 a year; the air traffic problem would soon be compounded by the arrival of jumbo jets and the SST. Alarmed, the Air Transport Association in January started an urgent program joining six avionics manufacturers* in the search for a solution. Died. Sir William Neil Connor, 57, British columnist better known as "Cas sandra," who for 31 years in the London Daily Mirror cut and thrust with fine partiality and fierce wit at everything from Germany to Radio Moscow and Joe McCarthy, plus sports, doctors, dogs, commercial TV and many of its performers; after a long illness; in London. After the clash, some 100 priests gathered outside the home of their Archbishop-76-year-old Gregorio Modrego Casáus-and sent in six of their leaders to demand that the church immediately take steps to excommunicate the guilty cops. They also said that they would "tell the truth" from the pulpit. Archbishop Modrego said nothing-but his silence wished the priests back to their pulpits...

Heartened by Roman Catholic Church support for their demands, some 1,000 striking workers in Barcelona gathered around the palace of Archbishop Gregorio Modrego y Casáus, seeking more aid in their dispute with employers. When police pushed to the scene, priests mingled with the protesting mob to restrain both workers and police from violence. Finally the archbishop himself appeared, to urge calm and send the workers on their...
