When the Viscountess Felicity Fabreigh opened her eyes the following morning, she was still in deshabille. She lay there awhile on the floor, watching the specks of dust floating in the sunlight that streamed through the casement. The morning caressed her stomach and thighs, which, as they usually did, looked perfect. Her head ached. She could not form a coherent thought. But with consciousness came recollection, and the images of the night just past swarmed to confront her: the empty decanter of brandy, her dead turtle Orlando, and, looming above all else, he who had wronged her once again. She could...

Koch had a wonderful eye for nuance. It lifts images that might otherwise seem beautifully rendered but fringed with banality into real, unforced poetry. Take, for instance, Central Park Looking North, 1967. A chilly, wet day in New York, seen through a metal casement window. An antique statue of a faun on the sill, far in space and temperature from his native Mediterranean. And high on the brick wall of the apartment building to the left, a pink patch: a ray of sun breaking through winter's grisaille. Surely Koch had been thinking of the "little patch of yellow wall...

In Young Woman with a Pitcher, circa 1658-60, the subject holds a gilt water pitcher while opening a casement window whose leaded pane looks just like a 1912 Mondrian apple tree turned on its side. Blue is everywhere: deep ultramarine in her skirt and sleeves, lighter blue in the cloth on the table, whose tone rhymes with the rolling bar of the map on the wall--a recession...

...Inlet is a quiet neighborhood, not because of its tranquillity but because of its gaps -- vacant lots where houses were razed and replaced by fields of pink clover, Queen Anne's lace and beer-bottle shards. Here and there are anachronistic gestures to elegance -- carved laurels in a window casement, a Victorian turret, delicate porch columns -- that lend the scene the haunted air of a horror-movie set. At times the Inlet seems just a bad joke. Standing over one bunker-style housing & project is a billboard touting one of developer Donald Trump's two casinos: TRUMP CASTLE. WHERE BETTER...
