...that may be precisely what the new company lacks. AOL has long since won the Net's largest mass audience, and through hundreds of sales alliances with companies, from Barnes & Noble to 1-800-FLOWERS, that audience is getting accustomed to the idea of the Net as one vast cash register. Now Case is gambling that as e-commerce grows from a novelty to the bedrock of 21st century capitalism, AOL can--perhaps must--become a major player in the lucrative "enterprise" market, helping corporations large and small move their operations online. "Companies who want to work with...
...best college-savings program you never heard about keeps getting better. As you think about year-end tax moves, consider dropping some cash into a state-sponsored plan where money for college grows tax-deferred and may garner a fat state income tax exemption as well. This plan is relatively new and often gets confused with more common prepaid-tuition plans, in which you pay today and attend later--removing worries about higher tuition in the future. Savings plans are vastly different and in most cases superior because they are more flexible...
...concept is a good one: a tribute to Johnny Cash, comprised of 20 different, relatively unknown artists singing 20 different Cash classics. This is essentially what Americana is, the new album released by Irregular Records. The end result, however, is somewhat disappointing, a musical hodge podge as bizarre as, well, Americana, and likewise not the sort of thing you'd want to take home...
...album does contain some refreshing interpretations of Cash's songs, while other interpretations do a decent job of simply imitating Cash's dry, soothing tones. Most of the renditions on the collection, however, are just plain random, running the gamut from the grunge rock/heavy metal chords of The Staggers' "Cry, Cry, Cry" to the zydeco twang of How's Bayou's "Johnny Yuma." The album simply jumps from one sort of sound to another with no transition, and the end result can only be called jarring. Americana also has its share of positively dreadful, not quite convincing singing, such...
...timing doesn't work. Selective plumping and pruning is one thing. I heartily advocate yearly or quarterly rebalancing of your portfolio: selling some of the asset class that has done best and buying more of the one that has lagged to maintain your desired mix of stocks, bonds and cash. I even endorse shifting among assets with part of your portfolio--no more than 20%--to try to take advantage of specific conditions every so often. Early this year I suggested tilting toward bonds because stocks were overvalued and lower interest rates seemed likely. Some wags would call that timing...
