...much does a hippopotamus hamburger cost? Who cares? Except maybe Billy Casper, who figures that the wilder the chow the better his golf. So he occasionally tries hippo (at $2.49 a lb.), and regularly downs elk ($1.49), bear ($2.25), moose ($1.98) and buffalo ($1.89). There must be something in it. Last week Casper was the only man on this year's P.G.A. tour to have cracked $100,000 in official winnings. He thus joined the late Tony Lema, who turned the trick in 1965, Arnold Palmer, who did it in '63 and '64, and Jack Nicklaus...

...professional golf, the way to a man's success appears to be through his stomach. Gary Player will go on for hours about the nutritive values of raisins. Jack Nicklaus dotes on oysters, consuming as many as six dozen at a sitting. Billy Casper, the year's top money winner ($81,515 so far) swears by a diet of buffalo steak and mooseburger. Last week at Akron's Firestone Country Club, Al Geiberger, 28, won the big gest prize of his seven-year pro career -the $25,000 P.G.A. championship - and announced that he owed...

However, if your readers infer that Casper became a superior golfer because he was first a Congregationalist, they may be nearer the truth. Congregationalists are often fine golfers, as I can attest on many a sunny Sunday morning...

Beating Arnold Palmer in an Open play-off is no longer news; he has been involved in three and lost them all. Casper did it spectacularly. Once the "fat young man" of the pro tour, now slimmed down 45 Ibs. (to 180 Ibs. on his 5-ft. 11-in. frame) on an antiallergy diet that includes such entrées as buffalo steak and mooseburgers, Billy was converted to Mormonism last Jan. 1 and spent the night before the play-off attending a church "fireside" 35 miles from San Francisco. Next day he fired his fourth subpar round...
