...surprise, then, that the last time the Stones took an American stage, in 1981, they looked like the supporting cast from a George Romero epic, specters from the boneyard of the pop psyche thirsting for a transfusion of celebrity. Now the boys have regrouped and regroomed; better care is being taken all around, and light is being made of age, of gossip, of old reputation. Charlie Watts, the Stones bedrock drummer, who was never one of the group's wilder revelers, looked momentarily startled the other day when a visiting writer extended a hand in greeting. Such a one is the film under consideration -- a Mafia comedy. Already the mind contracts with diminished expectations! Non-Italian actors gesturing rambunctiously, speaking with cotton candy in their mouths, plotting elaborate revenge with dim-bulbed resources. Cast Peter Falk as Dino Capisco, a dapper ) don just sprung from Sing Sing. Give him a score to settle with his weaselly partner Carmine Tarantino (Michael V. The Motor City demolition derby has now resulted in five arrests for wrecking without a permit -- and a healthy increase in the number of houses the city is clearing away...

...this having been made obvious by dozens of subaqueous movies, one has to wonder why James Cameron, whose Aliens and The Terminator were among the smartest and most frugally made recent entertainments, plunged into the $50 million-plus Abyss. Or, if he was sending his cast on a dive into a bottomless ocean trough, why he didn't at least arrange to have a monster paddle up to meet them...
