...John Milton made a movie, I don't think he would have cast Alanis Morrisette as God. If John Milton had a soundtrack to this movie, for the love of God he would not have included Alanis cacophony as the only lyrical track. But Kevin Smith--who has taken on the Greatest Story Ever Told in his new film, Dogma--has erroneously decided to do both. Depending on who you are, this either inspires horror, laughter or pious reverence to the Great and All-Powerful Alanis. On the first day, she created Jagged Little Pill. On the second...

With their penchant for re-christening (so to speak) all things Biblical, the cast and crew of Jesus Christ Superstar have renamed this meal "The Ultimate Supper." The original Last Supper starred only Jesus and the 12 apostles, but version 2.0 includes not only them but also most of the cast and crew joining together in one unholy racket. Everyone is trying to talk at once, each hoping to convey the unbridled, almost cultish enthusiasm that pervades all aspects of this show's production. Jesus tries to silence the masses a few times but eventually takes to silently breaking...

...publicity turf war aside, the "buzz" about this production has been largely positive, namely because the cast and crew have tried to steer clear of any sort of pointed commentary. This is a story about one of the most important figures in the Christian tradition, but it's just that--a story (and a great one, no less). The curtain is not going up tonight on a group of dancing, singing Biblical scholars or cultural critics but a group of zealous students ready to have a kick-ass-and-take-numbers good time...

...Frederica von Stade, performs 26 songs by Californian Heggie, who is currently adapting Dead Man Walking for the San Francisco Opera. Heggie sets poems in English by poets old (Emily Dickinson) and new (Philip Littell) in the Samuel Barber/Ned Rorem manner--agreeably lyrical, unambiguously tonal--and his big-league cast responds with obvious relish...

...marine preserve where, supposedly, all life was protected. Every day, looking down, I saw the sea bottom carpeted with the corpses of whitetip reef sharks, grotesquely stripped of their fins by poachers who had slashed them off to sell to the soup markets of Asia and had cast the living animals back into the sea to die. Around the world, the numbers of some shark species have declined as much as 80%. Some may already be practically extinct; the survivors in the current generation may be too few to replace themselves...
