After an exceedingly well-executed song-and-dance sequence involving a large cast of newborn babies and a whole lot of urine, the movie falls into something of a rut. The adventure gets a little too ridiculous, as the babies somehow find themselves in some woods in the middle of nowhere. Seasoned "Rugrats" viewers will feel a small alarm go off in their heads: something's wrong with this picture! What's wrong is that now, rather than the plotline and humor coming from the precocious babies or the silly, stupid adults, they're coming from a far too unlikely...
When Guys and Dolls opened on Broadway in the '50s the show's cast of gamblers, showgirls and missionaries, Manhattan setting, and swinging tunes buzzed audiences and quickly became one of the first musical theater classics. Played in all kinds of settings since, with casts ranging from the pathetically pre-teen to the deaf and geriatric, Guys and Dolls has proven difficult to ruin, remaining everyone's favorite for its lovable plot and classic '50s show tunes. This added to the fact that the muted vibrations of the orchestra and the sweet mellow tone of the piano actually, at times, cast more silence than resonance. Certainly, it was somewhat harrowing to hear the vast acoustics of Symphony Hall echo part music along with part emptiness...
...then there's our familiar cast of characters, only much younger and less cautious. Jake Lloyd is young Anakin Skywalker, soon to become Darth Vader. Liam Neeson dons Jedi gear, Natalie Portman assumes her role as queen, and Samuel Jackson even throws in a oneliner. Leading the cast is Ewan McGregor as the young Obi-Wan-Kenobi (if you think about what Titanic did for DiCaprio, imagine what will happen to indie-film-loving McGregor). Lucas knows that characters--unlike many sci-fi special effects extravaganzas--are the key Star Wars' success. Thus, he casts B-list stars that blend...
