Clad in a leather jacket and Ray Ban sunglasses, unflinching when an entire building blows up behind him, Woods brings the necessary mix of swagger, cool bravado, fearlessness and tightly-coiled anger to the role of Jack Crow. It's a good thing, too, since the supporting cast does not add much. Thomas Ian Griffith makes for a striking, if rather dull, villain, leering savagely but saying little of interest. With only one character, Soldier relegates everyone but Russell to the background. Even the little one sees of the supporting cast is no meaningful basis on which to judge their acting abilities. One nice twist in the story is that Todd, the only character to give any signs of development throughout during the film, has probably about ten lines of dialogue in the whole move. Russell does a good job of portraying Todd, who does not speak because he cannot cope with life beyond the military. He even comes close to evoking a bit of pity for the character...
Everyone in the cast held his own. The attractive set made good use of the theater's limited space, and the lighting and sound effects were executed without a hitch. Even the costumes, most notably Celimene's colorful flapper outfits, were delightfully cheerful...
...exciting new feature of the play however, comes at the end of the second act. The scene shifts continually from Celimene's apartment to Alceste and Arsinoe. The audience watches Alceste discover Celimene's deception at the same time they see her graphically seduce nearly every male in the cast. So, without any dialogue, the play highlights the 1920s' sensual excesses, Celimene's coquetry and Arsinoe's hypocrisy...
...opportunity to give free reign to his ideas. Though the resulting product is rough and at times obtuse, it has a degree of innovation one hopes to see more of in campus productions. The degree of experimentation in last weekend's production must have been a strain on the cast, but their overall willingness to aid in the testing of theatrical boundaries provided an unusual look at Richard III and its limitations...
