...turned upside down when he's declared gay by a former student-turned-star (Matt Dillon) constitutes Hollywood's own coming-out comedy about homosexuality. It's therefore an appropriately bland comedy that ends up reinforcing, not puncturing, gay stereotypes, and doesn't get enough out of a cast which includes Joan Cusack, Tom Selleck, Debbie Reynolds and Bob Newhart. Kline still manages to rise above the plodding humor, esp. in his showstopping dance scenes; and Selleck is terrifically funny as the sleazy, sardonic, faintly Mephistophelean tabloid reporter who dogs his footsteps...

Guy Pearce and Russell Crowe turn in fine performances that give you two different approaches to policing, thinking first and hitting later, or vice versa. A reptilian James Cromwell and slick Kevin Spacey round out a fine cast and finer tale...

Nothing about this production is groundbreaking, but the work put in by Lapine and his cast is admirable. A greater variation of feeling and behavior by Mr. and Mrs. Frank would make some of the play's flatter scenes more interesting, but the performance is upheld by the simple emotional power of the story. The ideas of this production of are all at the surface, candidly expressed, which is just what the story requires. The Diary of Anne Frank retains its potency as a work that illuminates a terrible chapter of the past and one girl's remarkable capacity...
